Welcome to the Legal Writing Institute!
Teachers of legal writing are working in an exciting time. The
importance of what we teach is being recognized more widely in practice
and in academia; colleagues are creating a valuable body of scholarship
in the field. Whether you are new to the discipline or a veteran,
we want to introduce you to the Legal Writing Institute and to some
of the resources available for members. Joining in easy, and membership
is free.
The Legal Writing Institute is a non-profit corporation founded
in 1984 to promote the exchange of information and ideas about legal
writing. The Institute also provides a forum for research and scholarship
about legal writing and legal analysis. The Institute promotes these
activities through a biennial conference, a newsletter called The
Second Draft, and a scholarly journal, Legal Writing: The Journal
of the Legal Writing Institute.
The Institute sponsors its national conference on legal writing
every other summer. Twelve conferences have been held since 1984,
the most recent of which was held in Atlanta, Georgia. The next
biennial conference will be held in 2008 in Indianapolis, Indiana.
For information on the Conference, visit the LWI
Conference Hompage.
The Institute has close to 2000 members, representing all of the
ABA accredited law schools in the United States. The Institute also
has members from Canada and Australia; from English departments;
from independent research and consulting organizations; and from
the practicing bar. Anyone who is interested in legal writing or
the teaching of legal writing may join.
We would like to make the resources of the Legal Writing Institute
available to you, and invite you to join the conversations and activities
of LWI. If you are interested in membership with the Legal Writing
Institute, please send your name, title, organization, address,
city, state, zip, country, e-mail address, and telephone number
to Yonna Shaw, by e-mail to Shaw_YW@Mercer.EDU,
