Legal Writing Institute - Other Conferences

LWI Biennial Conference

The 12th Biennial Conference of the Legal Writing Institute took place from June 7 to 10, 2006 in Atlanta, Georgia. All information about this conference and other LWI conferences can be found on the Biennial Conference page.

 

Other LW-Related Conferences

The Center for Excellence in Advocacy, in collaboration with Washburn's Legal Analysis, Research, and Writing Program, proudly announces the second Writing to Win Symposium. This year's topic is Plain Language Jury Instructions. The symposium will begin with an opening reception at Bradbury Thompson Alumni Center in Topeka, Kansas, on Sunday evening, April 6, with presentations and CLE events planned for Monday,April 7, and Tuesday morning, April 8, 2008. Keynote speaker for the event will be The Honorable Carol Corrigan, Associate Justice of the California Supreme Court, who chaired the California Judicial Council Task Force on Jury Instructions from 1997 to 2005. This year's Society of American Law Teachers teaching conference will be on March 14 & 15 at the Thelton E. Henderson Center for Social Justice at UC Berkeley Boalt Hall. The theme is "Teaching for Social Change" and brings together over 60 academics to discuss the how, what, and whether of infusing law school curricula with the ideals of social justice.

The opening plenary has an inspirational tone: Liberation, Hope, and Teaching for Social Change and features activist Eva Jefferson Paterson, President, Equal Justice Society; The Honorable Cruz Reynoso, Former California Supreme Court Justice & Professor, U.C. Davis School of Law; and Howard Pinderhughes, University of California at San Francisco. Friday's luncheon speaker is Linda Darling-Hammond, Charles Ducommon Professor of Education, Stanford University, Co-Director, School Redesign Network, and author of "The Right to Learn." Emory Law School's Center for Transactional Law & Practice will host a conference, entitled "Teaching Drafting and Transactional Skills: The Basics and Beyond," on May 30 and May 31, 2008. The programs will include sessions for beginning, experienced, and potential teachers of drafting and other transactional skills. Regional LW Conferences


2008 Rocky Mountain Regional Legal Writing Conference will be held in Salt Lake City, on March 21-22, 2008. The University of Utah S.J. Quinney College of Law is hosting the conference this year. The conference will be held on campus at the University Guest House and Conference Center, a collection of beautiful, late 19th century buildings completely remodeled for the 2002 Winter Olympics. There is also a block of rooms at the Marriott University Park Hotel within walking distance to the conference site. Registration begins Friday at noon, with a full schedule of presentations beginning at 1:30 on Friday and continuing until 5:00 on Saturday. The featured plenary speaker will be Marc Galanter, author of the highly regarded "Lowering the Bar" and a leading figure in the empirical study of the legal system. International LW Conferences

Third Global Legal Skills Conference, planned in Monterrey, Mexico on February 28 to March 1, 2008. Information about the conference is available at www.fldm.edu.mx. This conference was held the first two times in Chicago, and it now moves to Mexico. (In 2009 it will be at Georgetown). More than 100 presenters over three days, surveying a wide range of skills, methods, and materials for those who teach students who speak English as a second language. Other skills are also covered in this comprehensive international conference. Other Conferences

Humanizing Legal Education Symposium: October 19-20, 2007, Washburn University School of Law: The dean and faculty of Washburn University School of Law, the editors of the Washburn Law Journal and the Conference Planning Committee are pleased to solicit law review article and presentation proposals for a symposium/conference October 19-20, 2007 at Washburn University School of Law in Topeka, Kansas. The program will begin with a welcome dinner Friday evening, October 19 and conclude with a dinner and social event on Saturday evening, October 20. Attendees should plan to arrive Friday afternoon and to leave Sunday morning, October 21. Please contact Professor Schwartz if you would like more information on the symposium.
