Assistant Service Professor of Law

St. Mary's University School of Law Office of Law Success invites applications for a full-time Assistant Service Professor of Law. The start date is July 1, 2023. This is an eleven-month position, and you will be hired for a two-year contract with renewal for good performance at the end of that term. Salary will range from $65,000 for a 10-month contract to $78,000 for a 12-month contract

The mission of Law Success is to ensure that St. Mary's students are successful in law school and beyond. Successful service professors are team oriented and collaborative, possess a positive mindset, are committed to excellence in teaching and academic support, and demonstrate passionate dedication to the students with whom they work. As this position is student facing and requires a campus presence, this is a limited remote work position.

For this role, each academic year you will teach approximately 30-40 1L students Legal Communications, Analysis, and Professionalism (LCAP) course. LCAP combines traditional legal research and writing with professional and academic skills development. Law Success requires a programmatic approach to teaching courses to ensure consistency between different sections of the same course and to provide a better student experience. First year service professors also work closely with the Assistant Dean of Law Success and the Legal Writing Director to plan and participate in interventions for at-risk 1L students. This role has a dual focus on the 1L course and academic support in developing legal writing skills.

Service professors will, among other things, participate on committees, teach classes, and regularly meet with individual students. Law Success Service Professors teaching LCAP also assist with academic workshops, orientation planning and execution, and in course planning and materials for the future academic year. St. Mary's has a full-time day and online part-time evening program, and service professors may teach in either or both based on the needs of the office.

Applicants for the position must have a JD degree, a strong academic record, excellent writing skills, at least two years of recent legal work experience post-JD graduation, and either aptitude for, or experience in, teaching legal research and writing and providing academic support.
