We are excited to have brought the conference to Seattle in 2015, and about having provided a conference that, like the previous four Applied Legal Storytelling conferences, was collegial, inclusive, and supportive of your work. The conference encompassed a variety of approaches to the idea of Applied Legal Storytelling. Among them were the uses of storytelling in law practice, legal education, and legal scholarship. Topics ranged from the ways in which fiction-writing techniques or narrative theory can inform legal storytelling; stories in the law, or law as stories; legal storytelling and metaphor; legal storytelling and cognitive science; and ethical considerations in legal storytelling.

The schedule in broad strokes:

The conference took place from July 21st through July 23rd, 2015, at the Seattle University School of Law. Once again, the presentation topics demonstrated creativity in design, and a breadth in the area of narrative across law, lawyering, and teaching.  

Tuesday, July 21: registration and sessions beginning at mid-day, followed by a reception in the early evening.

Wednesday, July 22 and Thursday, July 23 was devoted to an opening plenary and concurrent sessions. Meals included continental breakfasts, buffet lunches, and a dinner Thursday evening, per the conference tradition.

Registration fees:

$395, which included the meals and materials.

SETTING:

Location on First Hill: Seattle University School of Law is located on First Hill, a little over a mile east of downtown Seattle.

First Hill is an interesting area of Seattle, a good mix of the old and the new. The old will be the still-lingering bohemian and artist-centered culture of the area, reflected in its art centers, dance studios, and bars and cheap eats. The new reflects the influx of tech money into the city, mainly through trendy restaurants, espresso bars (including Starbuck’s new flagship coffee bar), and countless new condo and apartment complexes. The mix makes for a lively street life in the area.

Sessions took place at the Seattle University School of Law. For GPS location purposes, the best address to use is 1112 E. Columbia, Seattle, Washington. (The mailing address is 901 12th Avenue, Seattle, Washington 98122 but it doesn’t work as well on GPS apps).
