Assistant/Associate Professor of Law

LSU Law Center

The Paul M. Hebert Law Center at Louisiana State University seeks to hire multiple faculty for tenure-track or tenured positions. The Law Center has needs in a wide variety of areas, including but not limited to the following areas: administrative law, legal writing, artificial intelligence and cyber security, business law including contracts as well as upper-level business electives, environmental law, constitutional law, criminal law, criminal procedure, civil procedure, evidence, family law, legislation, professional responsibility, and food and agriculture. Applicants should have a J.D. from an ABA-accredited law school, some practice experience, superior academic credentials and legal scholarship, as well as a commitment to outstanding teaching.

The addition of legal writing to our list of tenure-track or tenured faculty needs reflects our faculty's recent unanimous vote to support tenure-track status for professors committed to excellence in teaching, scholarship, and service. We also welcome applications from professors who prefer to focus on teaching and service for our professional practice track, leading to 405(c) security of position with presumptively renewable 5-year contracts. The successful candidate will have a pivotal role in shaping the legal writing program as its professors continue their commitment to excellence and innovation in teaching and explore expanded roles in pursuing vibrant scholarly agendas.

The 1L LRW course is divided into a 2-credit first-semester course of predictive analysis, writing, and research, and a 2-credit second-semester course of persuasive analysis, writing, research, and oral advocacy. Courses meet for 60-minute hours. Professors may design their own lessons and assignments to achieve course outcomes, or they may collaborate with colleagues. The professors who teach in the program at LSU Law are generous, supportive, and open to innovation. To promote equity across first-year sections, graded assignment types and deadlines are agreed upon each semester. Each professor who teaches legal writing is allocated a workshop hour on the 1L schedule each week that is optional for students; use of that hour is left up to each professor.

At LSU Law, faculty on both the tenure track and professional practice track receive robust support for scholarship and teaching. This includes 2 student tutors, who attend the professor's 1L classes and hold office hours for those students, student research assistance of 20 hours/week, and access to generous summer research stipends. While future stipend amounts are not guaranteed, previous summer stipends have been up to $20,000.
