Instructor in Law
Vanderbilt Law School is seeking applicants for two full-time faculty positions to teach two sections of the first-year J.D. Legal Research and Writing course. The position begins August 1, 2023. A successful applicant will possess superb academic and employment records and will be appointed as an Instructor in Law. This appointment is a full-time, non-tenure track, 12-month position. The appointment may be renewed on a yearly basis depending on curricular needs.
The Legal Writing Department is a director-led program that aims to be highly collaborative. Instructors will assist with assignment preparation and are encouraged to develop materials and exercises for the benefit of all members of the department.
Instructors teach students to plan research, organize, and write both objective and persuasive analysis. The fall semester’s writing instruction focuses on analytical legal memoranda for fellow attorneys. In the spring semester, the focus shifts to advocacy, both written and oral. In both semesters, law librarians provide research instruction coordinated with legal writing.
A substantial portion of the instructor’s time during the semester is spent on reading and critiquing students’ writing. The instructor must also hold individual conferences with students during particular weeks of the semester to discuss students’ work. In addition, instructors may be required to assist with assignment preparation; this may include independent research, case review and analysis, and editing.

Requirements include:
- A J.D., a strong academic record, and useful employment experience;
- Superb writing and editing skills;
- Outstanding teaching potential;
- Experience working with international students preferred for LL.M positions; and
- Eagerness and availability to work very closely with Vanderbilt Law School students.
