Legal Writing Instructor

University of South Carolina School of Law

The University of South Carolina School of Law is hiring a Legal Writing Instructor to join our faculty for the upcoming 2023-2024 academic year. Our Legal Writing Instructors teach 1L Legal Research, Analysis, and Writing I and II courses, which are offered for three credits each in the fall and spring semesters. The Legal Writing Instructor will be responsible for teaching approximately 35 students each year, working closely with a reference librarian who will team-teach the course with the Legal Writing Instructor.

This position is a nine-month appointment. A Legal Writing Instructor also has the option to earn an additional summer stipend by teaching an elective course in Maymester or the Summer semester. Upon successfully completing initial contracts, a Legal Writing Instructor may receive presumptively renewable five-year contracts, conditional upon funding and satisfactory performance.

The position for which we are hiring adds a seventh Legal Writing Instructor to our core team of six, which will allow some of our team to periodically rotate out of teaching the 1L courses to teach upper-level writing courses.

The University of South Carolina is located in the state’s capital, Columbia, which is a vibrant college town. The Law School’s new, state-of-the-art building is within walking distance to the South Carolina State House, the South Carolina Supreme Court, the South Carolina Court of Appeals, and the Department of Justice’s National Advocacy Center.
