New York Legal Educational Opportunity Program (NY LEO)

The New York Legal Education Opportunity Program (NY LEO) is seeking to fill two (2) summer Legal Research and Writing Professor (Professor) positions. The foregoing positions will begin May 1, 2023 and end July 7, 2023. For the month of May, the Professor will course plan remotely. From June 1, 2023-June 30, 2023, the Professor will provide in-class instruction two days per week. The last week of the program, the Professor will grade the exams remotely, the exams are administered by the Teaching Assistants. Each Professor will receive a $9, 000 stipend. The New York Legal Education Opportunity Program (NY LEO) is designed to ensure a diverse legal community by promoting academic success in law school for individuals historically underrepresented in the legal profession. Through an intense five-week summer program, NY LEO assists college graduates that are economically and educationally disadvantaged in acquiring the fundamental and practical skills necessary to succeed in law school.

The NY LEO Program is administered by the Honorable Kathie E. Davidson, Dean of the New York State Judicial Institute. Students live on the White Plains campus of the Elisabeth School of Law at Pace University and participate in the program full-time. Experienced law professors provide instruction in first-year law school core courses as well as in legal research, writing and analysis. As part of the program, NY LEO Fellows will also have the opportunity to visit courts in session and meet with members of the judiciary and other legal professionals. Up to 30 Fellows will be enrolled in the law school preparation program that is scheduled to run from Thursday (June 1, 2023) through Friday (July 7, 2023).

RESPONSIBILITIES

The Legal Research and Writing Professor will be responsible for creating a course plan that incorporates (a) close case reading and case briefing; (b) CREAC method-issue spotting, rule identification, reasoning and analysis, and synthesis; and (c) developing foundations for practice and profession ready skills related to time management, self-care, study groups, ethical conduct, etc. The professor will teach for one and a half (1.5) hours twice per week. The Professor will also be responsible for grading papers, exams, class assignments for the Legal Research and Writing course. The professor is required to maintain weekly office hours. The professor will provide oversight of the NY LEO Teaching Assistant assigned to work with the course, the Fellow regarding the delivery of course content, and reinforcement of academic success skills. The Professor will also be responsible for assessing performance of the LEO program, as well as the LEO students.

QUALIFICATIONS

• Juris Doctorate from an accredited law school.
• Prior experience teaching the subject in a law school setting for at least two years.
