Hosted by University of Baltimore School of Law

The Capital Area Legal Writing Conference returns in 2026 with a two-day gathering of legal writing faculty from across the region and beyond. The University of Baltimore School of Law is proud to host this event and invites faculty to connect with colleagues, share innovative teaching practices, and engage with emerging developments in legal education.

Located in the heart of Baltimore, the conference offers an ideal opportunity to make a long weekend of it—exploring both Baltimore and Washington, D.C., in a single trip!

Conference Theme

Legal Writing in Transition: Teaching for a Changing Profession

The 2026 conference theme focuses on the evolving demands placed on legal writing and lawyering skills instruction. As the legal profession undergoes significant change—driven by the NextGen Bar Exam, technological developments (including generative AI), and shifting student expectations—legal writing faculty are rethinking how, what, and why we teach.

This conference especially welcomes proposals that:

  • Innovate in pedagogy and course design

  • Challenge traditional assumptions about legal writing instruction

  • Demonstrate thoughtful adaptation to a changing legal profession

Schedule and Logistics

For planning purposes:

  • The conference will begin in the early afternoon on Thursday, May 28, 2026

  • The conference will conclude in the late afternoon on Friday, May 29, 2026

There will be no conference registration fee.

General registration details and travel information will be announced in Spring 2026. We are arranging a conference hotel rate at a nearby hotel with easy access to campus and public transportation.

The law school is located directly across the street from Baltimore’s Penn Station, making travel especially convenient:

  • Easy access from Washington, D.C. via the MARC Train

  • Direct service from Delaware, Philadelphia, and New York City via Amtrak
