Alabama Law is seeking qualified applicants for a Professor of Legal Writing at the rank of Assistant, Associate, or Full Professor, depending on qualifications. This appointment is for a 9-month position with an initial three-year term. After initial renewal, additional three-year terms will be presumptively renewable.
The Professor of Legal Writing will teach two sections in the first-year legal writing program each semester and, for two semesters during the three-year contract, a small section of an upper-level writing or drafting course. Although section sizes sometimes fluctuate, a 1L section currently includes 13 students.
After 26 years of exemplary teaching and leadership, Kimberly Boone is retiring as Director of Legal Writing in the spring. Under her direction, our Legal Writing faculty benefit from both collaboration and autonomy, and we seek to maintain that balance going forward. An experienced candidate may be eligible for appointment as Director of Alabama Law's Legal Writing Program and/or Moot Court Program. The Director of Legal Writing will guide the development and improvement of the legal writing program and support the legal writing faculty. The Director of the Moot Court Program will oversee the coordination and execution of the Alabama Law 2L Moot Court Competition and serve as the primary advisor to the Moot Court Board. A Director may have a reduced teaching load and additional responsibilities as assigned. Additional compensation is available for a Director. Experienced candidates should indicate their interest in the Director appointment in their cover letters.
All applicants must apply through the University of Alabama’s job site at https://careers.ua.edu/jobs/search/law. Applications will be received until the position is filled but are preferred by September 25, 2026. Questions should be directed to Kimberly Boone, Chair of the Legal Writing Faculty Appointments Committee, at kboone@law.ua.edu.
