ALWD/LWI Survey

ALWD and LWI jointly sponsor a national survey of legal writing programs. The survey collects data on program design, curriculum, salary, workload, and status issues. Almost all law schools in the U.S. participate in these surveys.

The Association of Legal Writing Directors (ALWD) and the Legal Writing Institute (LWI) are pleased to present the results of the 2024–2025 Institutional Survey. The survey provides information about legal research and writing faculty, programs, and courses at 128 North American law schools, representing approximately 66% of the 195 law schools invited to participate.

This report is the latest iteration of a multi-year effort to modernize the longstanding ALWD/LWI Survey and expand the breadth of information collected. Although no survey can perfectly capture the varied and unique circumstances of every law school, these results provide valuable insight into current practices and emerging trends in legal writing education across North America.

We extend our sincere thanks to the designated respondents at each participating law school. Their time and thoughtful contributions make this report possible and help advance our collective understanding of legal writing programs.
